Pré-Rafaelitas

O Musée d'Orsay mostra uma boa selecção de fotógrafos que seguiram a estética pré-rafaelita da Inglaterra da segunda metade do século XIX, apogeu da época vitoriana. John Ruskin, principal ideólogo da Irmandade Pré-Rafaelita, defendia um regresso à natureza, ao modo artesal de fazer contra a velocidade e uniformização industrializada, potencial destruidura das "altas qualidades morais" que julgava presentes na arte medieval, algures entre a passagem do gótico para o Renascimento.
Entre pintores e fotógrafos victorianos são comuns os temas históricos retirados de obras de Dante, Shakespeare, Byron ou Lord Tennyson. A mostra estabelece um diálogo entre os quadros de John Everett Millais, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Ford Maddox Brown e as fotografias de Julia Margaret Cameron, Roger Fenton, Lewis Carroll e Henry Peach Robinson.

I have always loved the pre-raphaelite aesthetics and the images and symbols used by both the writers and painters of that time. When I studied English literature I found it very useful to study all forms of art at the same time, as there was an obvious influence of the rest of the artists of the period on each piece.
